A fantastic interview by NEWSTALK Ireland with a true footballing legend……..

By the time he was 23, Paul Breitner had won the European Cup, the Bundesliga, the European Championships and had scored in the 1974 World Cup final for Germany against Johan Cruyff’s total footballing Dutch side – Germany won that final 2-1 with Gerd Muller scoring the winner.  Breitner’s flowing locks, he was nicknamed “Der Afro”, and his outspoken support of communism meant that his profile was high both on and off the pitch. After a successful spell at Bayern, he went on to play for Real Madrid for three years, during which time Franco died and Spain became a monarchy.

Breitner retired from the game having won a World Cup, a European Championsip, 5 Bundesliga titles, 2 La Liga titles, as well as the German (1971, 1982) and Spanish Cups (1975). He spoke to Ger on Sunday about his life, legacy and politics
